LYRARAKIS

Established in 1966, this family owned winery lies at an altitude of 440m within the hinterland of Heraklion prefecture. Having revived and propagated near-extinct indigenous Cretan varieties, they now lead the island with precise and pure expressions of variety and terroir. With a number of certified organic vineyards and sustainable viticulture at the fore, quality is the keyword behind all of Lyrarakis wines, regardless of category or style.

With a product line split between regional blends (Queens), single-single site wines and the Estate blends, there is constant focus on coaxing the best from Crete and the indigenous grapes. The single varietal wines from specific top-class vineyards highlight the distinctive character of each variety as expressed in the particular terroirs while reflecting Lyrarakis winery’s philosophy.

    The Dafní grape variety was saved from extinction by the Lyrarakis family, when it was planted in the “Psarades” family vineyard at 480m. altitude in central Crete in the early '90s. Its name derives from the laurel (bay leaf) plant, which is called “Dáfni” in Greek, as the wine produced resembles these aromas. A wine with a distinctive herbal character, refreshing mouthfeel and intense aromatic aſtertaste, in a citrus fruit background.

    The Cretan variety Plytó was saved from extinction by the Lyrarakis family, when it was planted in the "Psarades" vineyard at 480m. altitude in the early '90s. An elegant organic wine, both fruity and mineral, with chalky notes. Balanced and full with vibrant acidity and slightly creamy aftertaste.

    "Armi" is the word we use in the cretan dialect to define the top of a mountainside. The vineyard called “Armi” in our area faces the east and lies at an altitude of 500 meters. The medium fertility soil combined with the continuous influence of beneficial winds, compose a unique microclimate. In these special conditions, the Thrapsathiri variety can perfectly express the wealth of its aromas and taste. This wine can age well.

    Mandilari Plakoura 2018

    The rare low-yield Plakoura vineyard is a premier cru slope at 500m. Altitude, with sandy, stony soil. The head-trained pruning in combination with the north-east exposure of the vineyard and plenty of sunshine, ensures that the grapes reach optimum ripeness at the time of harvest. Very thorough cultivation helps us achieve extremely low yields, succeeding in vinificating a very concentrated wine with a deep red colour and an excellent structure, which will age for a long time.
